Over the years that Love Shack has been in existence we have assisted a number of children that are homeless and/or abandoned. In turn, we rent a small house in the countryside for children that have nowhere to go. There are currently 10 permanent residents in the house. During the school holidays that number can double as children return from boarding school.

The house also serves as a place of respite for sick children and temporary care while a child’s guardian is in hospital. Similarly, if we have concerns about the safety and welfare of a child we invite them to stay at the house. While they are there we can assess their behaviour during play over a period of time rather than asking intrusive questions in a quick visit to their home where they may not feel free to talk.

The main aim of the house is to allow children to be children. Many of our students have had to parent younger siblings, have been kept off school to do housework or have suffered abuse by resentful relatives. We therefore strive to create a loving, relaxed and safe environment in which children can flourish and ultimately be the best they can be.
