Healthcare & Outreach

The Love Shack Outreach Office is located in Kawangware Slum, Nairobi, for the convenience of the families we serve. Although the main focus of our work is to assist children to go to school we can only do this if they are healthy. Given the unsanitary living conditions in the slums children are frequently sick. Poor water quality often results in typhoid, roundworm and intestinal amoeba. Malaria is also prevalent and many children suffer the affects of malnutrition.

In addition to every day treatment for ailments we have also provided funds for surgery for children. For example, Imma had a growth on her face that grew as she did. By the age of two it was the size of a golf ball. She required lifesaving neurosurgery but is now doing well and, thanks to her sponsor, is going to school. We have also provided medical assistance for children with eyesight and hearing difficulties, such as ear drum repair, cataract removal and stigmas correction. These are all relatively inexpensive procedures that were preventing children for performing well in class. Today all the students we have assisted in this way have gone on to be in the top five of their classes.

When someone comes to our office asking for assistance we listen to his or her story. If they are caring for orphaned children and are sick or elderly we try to assist where possible. Firstly, a member of our Outreach Team will visit the family home to assess their need is genuine. Once the details have been gathered, the team with discuss the best way to support the family, particularly the children. As well as education and healthcare we also provide;
